Forbes recently released its World’s Top Earning Authors list, acknowledging the top 15 authors in the book industry with the most earnings.  Some of the top authors were no surprise, such as James Patterson, who was the highest earner with $94 million from his 14 titles in 2011. Second to James Patterson was Stephen King, earning $39 million with the success of his Dark Tower series.

Several male children’s book authors made the list.  Jeff Kinney, known for his Diary of  a Wimpy Kid series, earned  $25 million with the latest installment, which sold 3.3 million copies worldwide. Also on the list was Rick Riordan for his Percy Jackson series, earning $13 million with his Egyptian and Greek Mythology books.

Several female young adult fiction authors also made the list.  The famed author, Suzanne Collins, who penned the popular Hunger Games series that was also turned into a movie made it on the list with $20 million in earnings. Collins’s earnings are only expected to increase when the next installment of the Hunger Games hits the big screen soon.   J.K. Rowling, the brains behind the Harry Potter series, earned $17 million this year. Not only has her success continued with the Pottermore store, but she also released her first adult novel, A Casual Vacancy. And, Twilight fans will be happy to know that their favorite author, Stephanie Meyer , also made it to the list with $14 million in earnings.
